13.00 – 15.00 with 15 min coffe break: 3R in Toxicological Testing

15.15 – 15.45: A plea to reduce or replace fetal bovine serum in cell culture media

Jan van der Valk is trained in biomedical sciences. He is active in the field of 3R-alternatives in animal experimentation since 1988, works at the Department of Animals in Science and Society and currently coordinates the 3Rs-Centre Utrecht Life Sciences. He chairs a Dutch working group on education and training that provide advice with regard to laboratory animal science education and training. He lectures on 3Rs alternatives in several courses and supplies information on the 3Rs. He is also very active in informing the research community about the use of animal-derived products in cell culturing and that we should remove these components to be able to talk about true alternatives to animal testing in toxicology.
